“Electrical Storm” Digital Release, August 23, 2024

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-08-22)

The final release in the “To Love and Only Love” collection will be released tomorrow, Friday, August 23. The single to wrap things up is “Electrical Storm”.

The series started on April 5 with the release of “Discothèque” and has worked its way chronologically through U2’s released singles from 1997 to 2002’s “Electrical Storm”.

  • “Discothèque” (April 5, 12-tracks)
  • “Staring at the Sun” (April 19, 5-tracks)
  • “Last Night on Earth” (May 2, 6-tracks)
  • “Please” (May 16, 7-tracks)
  • “If God Will Send His Angels” (May 31, 5-tracks)
  • “Mofo” (June 14, 5-tracks)
  • “Sweetest Thing” (June 28, 5-tracks)
  • “Beautiful Day” (July 19, 9-tracks)
  • “Stuck in a Moment” (August 3, 7-tracks)
  • “Elevation” (August 9, 10-tracks)
  • “Walk On” (August 16, 4-tracks)
  • “Electrical Storm” (August 23, 5-tracks)

That’s 80 tracks in total, most unavailable before these releases on streaming services, made up of B-sides, live versions, remixes and alternate recordings. (And for those who don’t subscribe to a streaming service, they are available to listen to free via some services such as YouTube and Spotify’s ad-supported service.) Throughout the project, a new single was released roughly every two weeks, but increased in speed to weekly at the end of the project.

The songs included on the new “Electrical Storm” release, available tomorrow, are as follows:

  • “Electrical Storm” (William Orbit Mix / Radio Edit) – U2 (04:26)
  • “New York” (Nice Mix) – U2 (05:45)
  • “New York” (Nasty Mix) – U2 (05:01)
  • “Electrical Storm” (Band Version) – U2 (04:25)
  • “Bad / “40” / Where the Streets Have No Name” (Live from Boston, Jun. 6, 2001) – U2 (12:27)

Releases will be available in CD quality and compressed versions, as well as a higher resolution digital release at 24-bit, 44.1kHz.

“Electrical Storm” was released on October 22, 2002, to promote The Best of 1990-2000 compilation album. The song reached #1 in Canada, #2 in Ireland, and #5 in the UK. In the USA, the song reached #77 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #14 in the Alternative Songs chart.

“Electrical Storm” was the last U2 single released prior to the launch of iTunes. In 2003 it was one of the first singles uploaded to iTunes when that service launched, with two versions available which matched the track listing of the singles. In 2004 it was also available in The Complete U2 but in most stores, these digital versions have not been available for some time.

More information on “Electrical Storm” can be found in our “Electrical Storm“ discography entry. More information about the “To Love and Only Love” collection can also be found in the discography.

What comes next? The band are releasing a few projects this Fall. The first announced was the “Zoo TV Live in Dublin“ EP, which arrives next week and will be available on digital services, CD, and 12-inch record. The EP features five songs taken from U2’s 1993 Dublin concerts (six songs if you are in Japan and buy the SHM-CD format). It is out on August 30. On September 3 there will be a special preview of V-U2, the new 72-minute film that will show exclusively at Sphere in Vegas. And we are still waiting on the announcement of a collection of all things relating to How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb which should be out in November. We’re told this new boxed set will include a disc of demos from the album titled How to Assemble an Atomic Bomb. We’re looking forward to that. And hopefully after these projects, the band will get the album they’ve been working on out in early 2025.
