FanClub Updates: U2.Com

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2020-06-14)

A few quick bits in relation to U2.Com follow. If you aren’t a subscriber, much of this will not apply.

In early June, U2.Com uploaded a newly digitized issue of Propaganda to their website. Propaganda was the second fan club magazine, which started publishing in 1986, and stopped publication in 2002. Since 2013, U2.Com has been slowly digitizing old issues of the magazine and adding them to an online collection. The newest issue uploaded is issue 1, the first issue of this magazine, published and sent to subscribers in 1986.

The new upload is the first issue of the magazine uploaded since early 2017, so it is nice to see that they haven’t forgotten this initiative. Hopefully more will be added soon. Some years they’ve uploaded a number of issues, and in other years there have been none. But for those who would like more, there was a book published in 2003 which collected some of the best content from Propaganda and the earlier U2 Magazine with a foreword by Paul McGuinness. The book is titled U2: The Best of Propaganda: 20 Years of the Official U2 Magazine. You can often still find the book available online or in used book shops.

Available now at U2.Com are the following issues:

You will need to be logged in to see the items above. And that brings us to our second note, how you sign into U2.Com has changed in recent weeks. We used to use a user name to sign into the site. That has now changed, and now when you sign in you must use the email address associated with your account instead. Can’t remember what email address you used to subscribe? U2.Com provides a hint, it should be the address that you receive your email regarding your account at, including the invoice for your last subscription.

If you cannot log in or have other issues with U2.Com, they have a help section available here, and also a Contact Us form there which can be used to get assistance.

They are asking any subscribers that have changed their address since they last subscribed to go into that help page and notify them that the address has changed, and that you not just change it in your profile. When sending this address change they ask you use the “Change of Address, Subscriber Gift” topic.

Finally, for those subscribing for 2020, the newest physical gift has started to arrive. This year the gift is a DVD of the final show on the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE tour, filmed in Berlin in November 2018. Also included in the gift is the ability to stream a 4K quality version of the show via U2.Com on demand for the subscription period. The stream debuted in March, and the DVDs have started to arrive, with several reporting arrivals in the USA to date. The front cover of the DVD is the replica of 10 Cedarwood Road, Bono’s childhood home, which is onstage for the final song.

The DVD comes packaged in a photo booklet which features photography from the 2018 tour. Not all of the photos used are from the Berlin show. This includes 22 pages of photography, most spread across two pages, plus the cover of the booklet, which houses the DVD at the back. The booklet is 7-Inch square, and is the same size as the booklet produced for last year’s fan club gift. The DVD itself features PCM stereo sound, as well as a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. The DVD is NTSC format. There are no bonus features on the DVD, and the video presentation is the same as what was streamed in March. The entire package is stretch wrapped and sealed when the outer packaging is opened.

To date we have only seen copies arrive in the USA, where these are shipped from. We are unable to answer any questions about customs or international shipments, although many have reported getting shipping notifications worldwide. As with any past gift, it usually takes several months from the first ones arriving until all subscribers have received their gifts. If you do have any issues with this gift, or haven’t received any of the past gifts, you should use the help section at U2.Com to report these issues. We are unable to assist you and are not associated with U2.Com.

The discography entry for this fan club release is available, and includes lyrics and other information about the release. Many thanks to Keith H. for sharing his photos of the fan club gift, which arrived yesterday.
