Gavin Friday Presents Friday, and U2 Song Debut

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2020-08-11)

A new show has just been announced for U2 X-Radio. The show will be a monthly show, called “Gavin Friday Presents” which will air Fridays at 11pm ET, or 8pm Pacific.” Even more exciting, it will have the debut of a brand new U2 song!

The show was announced today on U2’s SiriusXM Channel. Also announced, Gavin Friday will be getting the world premiere of a new U2 song, and Friday night he will be debuting U2’s recording of “Bang A Gong (Get it On)” The song is a cover of a T.Rex classic, and has been covered by U2, with Elton John on piano. The song will be released on September 4, 2020 on the compilation AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T.Rex and was recorded in 2017 with producer Hal Willner while U2 were on tour. Gavin Friday himself is featured on two songs on the album.

The ad for Gavin Friday’s show introduces him by saying “He’s an artist. He’s a lifelong U2 friend, and collaborator” before his voice breaks in to say “Hi, I’m Gavin Friday.” The ad says he will take control of the channel to share commentary, and a hand selected playlist on a monthly basis.

The first episode is scheduled for this Friday at 11pm. It is not yet showing up in the SiriusXM schedule.

Gavin Friday grew up with U2. He fronted the Virgin Prunes, has had an extensive solo career, and worked on a number of soundtrack projects over the years. He has also worked with U2 over the years. It was Gavin’s vocals that were heard during the intermission on the Innocence and Experience tour on “The Fly” and again on the Experience and Innocence tour on “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.” We took a look at some of the work Gavin had done with U2 in our History Mix but also recommend visiting gavinfriday.com for more information on his career.

The new U2 song is a cover of the song by T. Rex. The recording will feature Elton John on piano. Trombone Shorty will also be heard on the track. The song was recorded in New Orleans on September 14, 2017 while the band was there on tour. The T.Rex album was put together by longtime U2 collaborator Hal Willner. The album was originally put together for lead singer Marc Bolan’s 70th birthday, but has been subject to a number of delays. Willner recently passed away from COVID-19. Bono has previously covered a T. Rex song with Gavin Friday. They recorded the song “Children of the Revolution” for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Asked about Bolan, and who was the bigger fan, he or Bono, Gavin Friday answered, “The way it worked in the ’70s is that I bought all the records and he nicked ‘em off me! I’m sure if you checked under his bed there’s a big pile of scratched T-Rex 45s belonging to yours truly.”

U2 X-Radio is available on SiriusXM in Canada and the United States. U2.Com have promised a monthly package of content from the station, but at this time plans for that have not been announced beyond the initial promise. We are told that “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” should be available on iTunes soon as a preview track in advance of the album’s September 4, 2020 release.
