Larry Mullen Contributes to #DrumForNHS Auction
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2020-07-17)
U2 have taken part in a number of auctions over the last few months, with benefits going to various healthcare related charities. Larry Mullen is taking part in another one of these, the Drumathon 2020 Charity Auction, with proceeds from the auction going to the NHS (National Health Services).
In this case, his contribution is a set of signed drum sticks. While that may not be that surprising, the drumsticks are being combined with drum sticks from other artists to make a unique snare drum using the sticks as part of the drum design. Joining Larry in contributing drum sticks are drummers from Blondie, Coldplay, Queen, Radiohead, Simple Minds and more.
The drum is being build by Meg Learmonth. The listing for the auction describes the drum as “This unique commemorative snare drum is the ultimate symbol of #DrumFOR NHS 2020 with signed drumsticks from legendary drummers who’ve united in their appreciation of the ultimate rockstars – our NHS and frontline workers who’ve been working relentlessly to save our nation’s health during this pandemic. 100% of the proceeds of all lots in this auction will be donated to the NHS Charities COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.”
The drum is estimated at a value of £500 – £1,000 and those interested can pre-register for the auction now at the Dawsons Auctions site.
The full list of contributors of drum sticks announced to date is as follows, but others are said to have promised sticks already:
- Clem Burke – Blondie
- Will Champion – Coldplay
- Larry Mullen – U2
- Roger Taylor – Queen
- Phil Selway – Radiohead
- Al Murray – The British Drum Company
- Ian Matthews – Kasabian
- Paul Stewart – The Feeling
- Alexis Nunez – The Kooks
- Mel Gaynor – Simple Minds
- Errol Kennedy – Imagination
- Steve White Paul Weller – The Style Council
The auction takes place Saturday July 18 at 19:00, UK Time.
In May, Adam Clayton and Bono contributed to another auction to support the NHS, with Adam contributing a T-shirt, a ring and a poster, and Bono contributing hand written lyrics to “One” and the pen used to write them. Also in May, handwritten lyrics to “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” brought in £76,000 in an auction held by Island Records for COVID-19 Relief. The lyrics were contributed by Bono.
