The Man on the Train Screening in Japan

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2019-10-17)

Word has reached us of a special promotional appearance by Larry Mullen while the band is performing in Japan. U2 are playing at the Saitama Super Arena on December 4 and 5, 2019. The night before the first concert on December 3, 2019, there will be a special screening of the movie The Man on the Train which starred Larry Mullen opposite Donald Sutherland. The movie was originally filmed in Canada in April 2010 and released in 2011, directed by Mary McGuckian. The film is a remake of a 2002 French film, L’homme du train. The screening will be held at United Cinema, Toyosu, at 19:00 on December 3. It is being listed as a premiere screening of the film for Japan. The film was released on DVD in Japan in 2014.

The MC for the event will be Robert Harris, and a press release for the event lists Larry Mullen will be in attendance and will take questions after the film has been shown. It is noted that the schedule of the event may be changed due to scheduling issues with Larry’s schedule. A greeting will be held before the film. It is not clear if Larry Mullen will be present for the greeting as well.

Two different tickets will be available, a general ticket, priced at 3,300 Yen, and a VIP ticket, priced at 14,300 Yen. The VIP seats will come with the ability to participate in a Q&A session after the screening which is where Larry is listed as participating, as well as a commemorative T-Shirt. The press release also mentions there will be a present for both those in general seats and in VIP seats.

Tickets will go on sale on October 19 as part of a pre-sale through Lawson tickets. Participation in this presale requires prior registration at the ticket site, and will also require people to register for the pre-sale. It is too late to register at this point and take place. There will also be a general sale for remaining tickets which will take place starting November 6 at noon. This sale will end when all tickets are sold.

We will have further information if possible, closer to the event.

We have discography entries for the film The Man on the Train, as well as for a solo track from the film by Mullen with Simon Climie.

The event is being advertised by OfficeMullen, which runs the Japanese Facebook site for The Man on the Train, which promised in June that there would be big news later in the year about the film. There is no update at that page yet about this showing. Office Mullen is a Japanese management company, run by the former manager of the U2 account for Polystar Records in Japan.

U2’s entire catalog is also being reissued in Japan to celebrate U2’s return to that country. These will be reissued on November 6, 2019. More information about those releases can be found here.
