Rumour: New Live EP in June
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-05-13)
Please Note: This story deals with a project that has not officially been announced, and until it has, we will mark any information pertaining to this release as a rumour. However, we have heard from multiple sources that this one is happening.
We are hearing from previously reliable sources that U2 are close to announcing a new EP. The EP will be released on vinyl in mid-June, at this time it is not known if there will be a digital release. The tentative date is mid-June for this release from what we are told, and we are expecting a formal announcement of this EP soon, perhaps even mid-week.
We can tell you that the EP will be a live EP, featuring five songs recorded live from the band’s historical archive. We are told that these five tracks are from a single concert, that has not been commercially released before (i.e. the live show was not released in full as a fan club gift, nor were they part of one of the band’s live video titles.) The EP will be pressed on heavy weight vinyl, and will be a coloured pressing.
The release is being described as limited. There’s no need to panic just yet, as limited just means it will be a one-time pressing and more copies will not be made in the future. The “Atomic City“ 7-Inch released in late 2023 was also described as limited and is still available from many online shops months after it was initially released. More information on how the item is being released will be made clear when it is announced.
U2 last released live material on a vinyl EP in the form of “The Europa EP“ in 2019 which included “Love is All We Have Left” and “New Year’s Day” taken from the 2018 tour, mixed with a couple of remixes. Prior to that it would have been 2010’s “Wide Awake in Europe“ which included three live songs, taken from three different concerts. Both of these EPs were released for Record Store Day events.
We hope to have more information on this release soon. (And expect an announcement as early as mid-week.)
