Songs of Surrender: The Credits
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2023-03-15)
The album Songs of Surrender arrives on Friday, March 17, 2023. Some fans have started to receive copies already through pre-orders, however, so keep an eye on your mailbox if you’ve ordered a copy of the album. If you are trying to avoid spoilers between now and Friday, now is the time to look away. For those who aren’t, we are now taking a look at the credits for the songs on Songs of Surrender. We’ll document a few things of interest from our own read through of the credits, and the credits will follow for those who want to take a look in detail.
On all of the songs of the album Adam Clayton is credited on Bass guitar. Bono is listed as vocals on all of the tracks. Neither are credited elsewhere on other instruments. Bono also receives a producer credit on “With or Without You”.
On all of the songs of the album Larry Mullen is credited on drums and percussion. He is also listed on piano on “One”. We know Larry had some injuries during the time this album was recorded, so a question we’ve heard often is whether or not it is Larry on drums throughout the album. On “Sometimes You Can’t Make it On Your Own” Larry is credited with drums and percussion, but Andres Forero is also credited with percussion. Forero has toured with Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keys among others, and helped to develop music for Hamilton: An American Musical. Likewise on “Two Hearts Beat As One”, Larry is listed on percussion, but so is Duncan Stewart, a frequent collaborator of the band. In a couple of spots drum programming is credited to others, such as “Peace on Earth” (The Edge), and “Desire” (Duncan Stewart) but Mullen is listed as drums and percussion on all of these tracks as well. If there are drums appearing on a track, other than these mentions, it is Larry that is credited.
The Edge? He’s on everything else. It’s an impressive list that he’s credited on, including guitar, keyboards, piano, vocals, Rhodes, bass guitar, programming, dulcimer, bass, drum programming, Wurlitzer electric piano, and ukulele. You can tell this project is very much his. Additionally he’s credited as the overall producer on the album, listed as producer for each song, and also listed as an engineer on fifteen of the tracks on the album.
There are some familiar names appearing on the album. Our favourite appearance? Ezra Mullen joins U2 on tambourine alongside his dad for “Stuck in a Moment”. Longtime collaborators Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois pop up, not in a production role, but as background vocalists on “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. Longtime bass guitar technician, Stuart Morgan also appears on “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” credited with Fender bass. Terry Lawless, who regularly accompanies U2 on tour, playing from the underground, appears on keyboards on both “Out of Control” and “I Will Follow”.
Declan Gaffney may be best known to U2 fans as part of the duos “Fish Out of Water” and “St Francis Hotel”, producing a number of remixes for U2 over the years. He’s also been part of U2’s studio team for some time now. On this album he’s credited with piano on “Song for Someone” and “Cedarwood Road” and is credited with synthesizer on “Where the Streets Have No Name”. Andy Barlow and Jolyon Thomas, both of whom worked with U2 as producers on Songs of Experience are both credited on “The Little Things” on keyboards, with additional guitar credited to Thomas. Producer Bob Ezrin appears on synthesizer on “Beautiful Day”, organ on “All I Want is You”, acoustic guitar, sound effects and strings on “Stay (Faraway So Close!)”. Trombone Shorty who previously worked with U2 on a live recording of “The Saints Are Coming” and their cover of “Bang A Gong” appears as part of the brass band on “Red Hill Mining Town”.
HAUSER is Croatian, Stjepan Hauser, one half of the popular 2CELLOS duo. Classically trained, the play instrumental arrangements of popular songs. Covers of “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “With or Without You” were included on their 2011 debut album 2Cellos. HAUSER is here solo, and appears on cello on “Where the Streets Have No Name”, “Dirty Day” and “Vertigo”. He’s not the only person appearing on cello. Peter Gregson appears on cello on both “Bad” and “Walk On”. Gregson is a cellist and film and television score composer from Scotland. Bob Ezrin, credited as a producer on the album also takes on the cello for “40” on the album.
Duncan Stewart is all over these tracks, and is credited with performing on 15 tracks. He’s credited as an additional producer on the songs on the album, and also engineered and mixed a good portion of the album. He’s credited on backing vocals on “Two Hearts Beat As One”, and “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)”. He’s listed on keyboards (“Beautiful Day”, “Walk On”, “Lights of Home”), organ (“Lights of Home” and “Sometimes”), Wurlitzer electric piano (“Electrical Storm”, “I Still Haven’t Found” and “With or Without You”) and synthesizer (“Where the Streets Have No Name”, “The Miracle of Joey Ramone”). There are also credits for Stewart on guitar (“Invisible”), marimba (“If God Will Send His Angels”), Rhodes (“With or Without You”), acoustic guitar (“Stay (Faraway, So Close!)”), flute (“Lights of Home”), programming (“Walk On” and “Desire”) and drum programing (“Desire”), percussion (“Two Hearts”) and hand claps (“Two Hearts”). Stewart has been working with the band for a number of years. (Including credits as an engineer on Songs of Experience) He also has his own recording career under the name Dunx. He’s part of the family as well, being Ali Hewson’s nephew.
Other appearances on songs include Abe Laboriel Jr. as a background vocalists and vocal arranger on “One” (he’s Paul McCartney’s touring drummer as well). John Metcalfe is credited with the brass band arrangement on “Every Breaking Wave” and the string arrangement on “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” (Metcalfe is a British composer, and former member of The Durutti Column). “Red Hill Mining Town” includes Dan Oestreicher and Yirmayah Yisrael on saxophone, and Rori Coleman as part of the brass band.
The Hillspring Children’s Choir from Mumbai appear on “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, arranged, and orchestrated by Karsh Kale who also provides bells on the track and arranges the choir and orchestra. In 2019, when visiting India for the first time on tour, U2 worked with a number of Indian DJs to remix some of their biggest songs, released as an EP called “The Eternal Remixes“. On that EP, Kale remixed, “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. Kamakshi Khanna who features alongside the choir on the new 2023 version of “Pride” is also featured on the 2019 remix, titled the “Karsh Kale 100 Voices Remix”.
As mentioned above, The Edge is credited as producer of the overall album, and as producer on each of the 40 songs. Along with The Edge production credits include Bob Ezrin, listed as producer on two tracks (“Beautiful Day” and “All I Want is You”) and listed as co-producer on 26 additional tracks. Ezrin is a Canadian music producer known for work with Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel, Thirty Seconds for Mars, Andrea Bocelli, Rod Stewart and Nine Inch Nails as well as the second album by 2Cellos. He co-founded and works with The Edge on Music Rising, and was producer of the reopening of the Louisiana Superdome featuring Green Day and U2 in 2006. Ezrin also worked with U2 on their Live from the BBC television special, filmed at Abbey Road studios in 2017, featuring a full orchestra. Some of the vocals in “Beautiful Day” on this new album are sampled from that performance.
Also listed in the role of producer on the album is Bono (on the song “With or Without You”). Duncan Stewart is listed as a producer on three tracks, “Beautiful Day”, “Desire” and “Two Hearts Beat as One”. He’s also listed as an Additional Producer on a further 34 tracks on the album. Declan Gaffney receives a producer credit on “Dirty Day” and is listed as Additional Producer on both “Vertigo” and “I Will Follow”. Gaffney and Stewart are also listed among the engineers on the album, and both were involved in mixing the individual tracks, as was Bob Ezrin, Alastair McMillan, Richard Rainey and Rob Kinelski.
