U2 Hits #1 on the Dance Club Charts on Billboard

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2018-07-20)

U2 have reached #1 in the Dance Club Chart this week, published by Billboard Magazine in the USA. The song charting is their newest single, “Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way” and the song has been on the charts for 10 weeks, slowly climbing towards the top. The song has been supported by a large number of promotional remixes aimed at DJs over the last two months. The song appeared just under the chart at #53 for the week of May 19, and entered the chart at #49 on the May 29th dated charts. The song took a number of large jumps, and has been in the top 10 since the charts dated June 23. The song reaches #1 in the July 28 dated chart.

The song is also climbing up other charts on Billboard – the song has peaked to date at #16 on the Triple A charts, #21 at the Adult Top 40 charts, #31 on the Hot Rock Songs charts, and #15 on the Adult Contemporary charts as of last week, and appears to still be moving upwards in many of these charts.

The Dance Club Songs is a chart published by Billboard in the USA. It was launched as the Disco Action chart in 1976, and has gone through a number of changes over the years. This is the fourth time U2 has reached the #1 position on the charts, and “Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way” follows “Lemon,” “Discotheque” and “Beautiful Day” as holding the top spot in the charts. This is also the first time that U2 has appeared in the Dance Club Charts since 2009 when “Magnificent” entered the charts and rose to the #2 position. Prior to “Magnificent” the last song to hit these charts was “Vertigo” reaching #8 in 2004.

The chart is compiled from playlists submitted by DJs in clubs, listing the songs they played each night. Not every DJ is eligible to submit playlists, those who do must meet certain criteria to become “Billboard-reporting DJs” and have to apply to submit their playlists. The song itself is tallied, so all of the mixes for “Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way” played by these Billboard-reporting DJs are counted towards the total. It is not one single mix that is being counted.

Madonna holds the record for the most hits in this chart, the most top-ten hits, and the most total weeks at number one. She has had a total of 46 hits to reach number on in the chart in her career.

Over 40 remixes
of “Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way” have been sent digitally to DJs for promotion over the last two months. The latest mixes, those by HP Hoeger and Rusty Egan, were sent for promotion last week, and were commercially released today on streaming services and digital store fronts.

As part of the push for this song, three promotional CDs each containing four remixes of the song were also issued. These were given away at “Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way” launch parties at LGBT clubs around the USA in June and July, including events in Florida, Illinois, California and New York. These events invited attendees to “Be proud and celebrate ‘Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way’” calling the song U2’s summer anthem. The release campaign also gave away promotional fans, stickers and posters. Some of the producers who participated in the remixes of the song were part of these release events, including Twisted Dee, Dark Intensity, and DrewG.

Over the course of the last two months, we’ve had the opportunity to speak to a number of the producers who have remixed the song, and invite you to find out more about the campaign from the DJs themselves:
