U2 Rehearsals in Berlin

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2018-08-29)

SPOILERS AHEAD. USE CAUTION.

U2 have been rehearsing today in Berlin for the opening show of their second leg of the #U2eiTour. The band was present at the venue yesterday, but no rehearsals were documented and no music could be heard outside the venue. Today however a number of songs have been heard by the crew at U2Tour.De, who are documenting the whole thing as it happens on their Twitter feed.

The rehearsal started around 9pm in Berlin.

The band has played the following:

  • “The Blackout”
  • “Lights of Home”
  • “I Will Follow” (partial, then full)
  • “Red Flag Day”
  • “Beautiful Day”
  • “The Ocean”
  • “Iris”
  • “Cedarwood Road”
  • “Sunday Bloody Sunday”
  • “Until the End of the World”
  • “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” (Intermission)
  • “Elevation”
  • “Vertigo”
  • “Even Better Than the Real Thing”
  • “Acrobat”
  • “You’re the Best Thing About Me”
  • “Summer of Love”
  • “Pride (In the Name of Love)”
  • “Get Out Of Your Own Way”
  • “New Year’s Day”
  • “City of Blinding Lights”

The band then took a break, and then came back and played “Summer of Love” two additional times before breaking for the evening.

Originally “The Blackout” was not on the list, but it was played to start the rehearsal. Some have asked about “Love is All We Have Left”, but in the North American shows that was mostly pre-recorded, so it is unlikely the band needs to rehearse that song.

The songs are following a similar set list to that used in North America. Below are a few notes about how it has differed. The rehearsal ended without the final encore was rehearsed.

“Red Flag Day” appeared sparingly in the North American shows, being performed at just four shows, as well as at the special show at the Apollo Theatre. Most nights that slot was filled by “Gloria” or “All Because of You.”

“Even Better Than the Real Thing” is new for this leg, taking the slot held by “Desire” for first leg. “Even Better Than the Real Thing” was last performed at the end of the second leg of the Innocence + Experience Tour in 2015. With “Desire” removed from the set, U2 are now not playing any songs from The Joshua Tree or Rattle and Hum leaving the late 1980s out of this rehearsal.

“Staring at the Sun” was not played in the usual spot, “Summer of Love” appears to now be filling that location, and like “Staring at the Sun” was played acoustically.

“New Year’s Day” was also performed during the Berlin rehearsal. That song was played only once in North America on the first leg of the tour, and then it was played early in the set. Now appears after “Get Out Of Your Own Way” a place where “American Soul” was previously played. “American Soul” was not played during the rehearsal.

A big thank you to U2Tour.de for sharing the news of the rehearsals. The band takes the stage on Friday night for the continuation of the tour.
