U2’s Claw Stage Being Renamed and Erected

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2019-10-01)

Update: October 1, 2019

“The Claw” is now being set up in Utah, and the team at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium are letting us all watch the progress via a live webcam feed.

The feed is available here. Work started today on the erection of the stage.

Original Story: September 13, 2019

One of the three stages, nicknamed “The Claw”, used by U2 on their worldwide U2360 tour in 2009 – 2011 has been sold, and will be on display at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium as part of a new expansion to the facility. The news that the Aquarium had purchased the claw broke in 2018, but they are nearing installation of the stage as part of their expansion.

The claw will be used at the entrance to the facility and is being named the EECO, or Ecosystem Exploration Craft and Observatory. The installation of the claw will be a permanent fixture at the Aquarium, and although not yet on display, we can tell you that plans to raise the claw will come to fruition this month, likely at the end of next week, or at the start of the following week. The event to raise the claw into place is being called “EECO-Rising.”

When the news that the claw had been purchased first broke, Loveland Living Planet Aquarium founder and CEO, Brent Andersen said, “This landmark will shine a light on our mission to inspire people to explore, discover, and learn about Earth’s diverse ecosystems.” Andersen saw the claw in use at a U2 stage first in Barcelona, and again at the concert in Salt Lake City.

The expansion plans for the aquarium include a nine-acre, $25 million upgrade to the current facility including the 165-foot tall claw structure. The aquarium is located in Draper, Utah, just outside Salt Lake City.

Although the Claw is going up, the full expansion of the grounds are still under construction and it may be some time yet before fans can visit the area under the Claw. The Aquarium is open however during this expansion. More information on the Aquarium and the expansion is available at the Aquarium site.
