Until the End of the World Movie Re-Issues
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2019-10-11)
In 1991, U2 were one of many bands that contributed a song to the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ Until the End of the World film. The song, naturally, “Until the End of the World” was the second to last song on the soundtrack album and appeared in the film. The version used is a different recording of the song, and is not the mix that is found on Achtung Baby, and the version used in the film is slightly different again. The soundtrack was issued on Warner Brothers records in December 1991, and over the years has become very difficult to find. Our discography entry for the soundtrack can be found here.
Now there are a couple of upcoming releases relating to the film we can tell you about.
First off, the soundtrack is being reissued on December 6, 2019 on a double vinyl set. The album will be pressed in black vinyl, and will be on two discs. This set will be the first release of the album on vinyl in the USA, and will be issued by Run Out Groove and Warner Records. The catalog number will be ROGV-072. The set will be limited to 2000 copies. Run Out Groove is a new label, that allows viewers to vote for upcoming releases, and the most popular selection is released. Until the End of the World is available to pre-order now, but unfortunately they are only taking orders from USA residents.
The soundtrack is being released at the same time that the film is being reissued as part of the Criterion Collection. The newly restored directors cut of the film will include a 4K restoration, supervised by director Wim Wenders, an introduction by Wenders, and interview with Wenders about the film soundtrack, and much more. The film will be issued on December 10, 2019, and is available in two formats, a 2-disc blu-ray collection, and a 3-disc dvd collection. Both will contain the same extras.
The album will contain the original album cover, but the video releases will be done with a new cover.
Many thanks to Matthieu M, Brad H. and Theresa C for information pertaining to these releases.
