Show Details:
U2 play the Baggot Inn, with support by The Blades.
The show is attended by Sounds writer Dave McCullough, who has become a fan of U2, and has convinced his editors that the band should get a feature. Sounds and McGuinness also split the cost to have photographer Paul Slattery come over for the meeting and shows. The band do a photo shoot at Ringsend Power Station and then the next day attended the show at the Baggot.
McCullough’s profile is published in the September issue of Sounds. Bono tells McCullough, “Tonight’s something of a test night, this is the first New wave type gig this place has put on and if it’s a success then bands might be able to use it regularly.” McCullough speaking of the show shares, “Their set is quite brilliant. It’s an often disarming experience traveling out of London and seeing relatively unknown bands capable of taking on the prima donnas of the Hammersmith Odeon, Marquee and Nashville and wiping the proverbial floor with them and this was yet another such occasion. U2 are total, solid music, naturally intended for the head and for the feet, inculcating meaning innovation, expressing enough power in communication to knock the unsuspecting listener on his back.”
He calls The Edge a “flamboyant player”, who creates a “unique niche of sound that spreads across U2’s music with a scintillating effect.” As part of the review he also shares that the microphone stand broke duirng the performance and rather than panicking, Bono calls for a kid in the front to act as a mic stand during the song. It is through McCullough’s review that we know “Out of Control,” “Twilight,” “Stories for Boys,” and “Boy/Girl” is played.
Dave Fanning is present at the gig and acts as DJ before and after the bands play.
