Show Details:
An appearance on the Late Late Show in January 1980 is often stated as being U2’s first performance on the show. However, there was press in November of 1979 that listed that U2 would be appearing on the show to perform on November 17, 1979. The story from The Evening Herald published that day lists that U2 would perform at The Dandelion Market this afternoon, and would appear on The Late Late Show this evening. If they did appear, little is known about this appearance, not even what they would have played, but with the band promoting their single “Three” it is likely that one of the songs from that single would have been performed.
In a profile published at the start of 1980 mentions, “1979 has been a very good year for U2. Amongst other things, it saw the release of their succesful debut single ‘Three’ (consisting of ‘Stories For Boys’, ‘Out of Control’ and ‘Boy/Girl’) on CBS, a number of TV appearances, including a concert broadcast from Cork Opera House and a recent Late Late Show.” This suggests their first appearance was in 1979 on the Late Late Show, but as it was published after the 1980 appearance does not fully confirm.
A show guide in Hot Press also lists U2 as appearing on the Late Late Show on November 17.
