Show Details:
After two shows on the original itinerary for the Boy tour were canceled, U2 returned to that early itinerary to play a show in Stroud at the Marshall Rooms. Opening acts for the show include Midnight & The Lemon Boys, and Demob.
Not much is known about this show, however, it is known that Ian Dench, an English musician who would go on to play in the band EMF was in attendance at this show at the age of 16.
Terry from Demob remembered the night opening for U2 in Stroud in the book Burning Britain: The History of UK Punk 1980–1984: “We played with U2 in Stroud, and they’d just released their first single, so they were just coming up. We were supporting them, and we did our set, and we had a huge following there; they were all booing U2 off, wanting us to go back on! And we had to go onstage and calm the audience down so they could finish their set, saying, ‘Look, lads, they’ve travelled a long way, let’s let ‘em play…!”
Later stories changed this somewhat, and suggested that Demob crashed the party late in the day on the day of the show, not having been on the bill, and convincing the venue to let them go on between Midnight & The Lemon Boys and U2, as they had brought a number of people with them to the show who wanted to see them play. The same crowd they had brought with them were the crowd that they went on stage later to ask to let U2 finish their set in peace.
The show drew about 60 people in total from eyewitness reports. The full set list is unknown.
