Show Details:
U2 played to a small crowd in Birmingham, with support by The Xpertz and Midnight & the Lemon Boys. The cost of the show was £3 although a number of attendees got in for free that night by volunteering to help with equipment.
Bono worked to get the audience into the show but with little success. Many ignored the band, and two attendees sat on the side of the stage with their backs turned to the band, while Bono would curl the mic wire around them to try to get the attention of the band.
The Xpertz were a local reggae band and were fronted by Andy Wickett, the former singer for Duran Duran, who would later be replaced by Simon Le Bon.
The venue has been listed as the Cedar Ballroom at times but the venue name was actually the Cedar Club, and was located on Constitution Hill. The set list is only known for the main set via a set list from the show. In the early days U2 would not list their encore songs on the set list, so at this point the encore is unknown. (Although very likely if they did an encore it was “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” and “The Ocean” again. Although with the reception the band were given, an encore would not have been guaranteed.)
