Snippets of Other Songs Performed by U2:
Peter Powell hosted a show on BBC Radio 1 running from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Tony Michaelides, working on artist development for Island Records, was promoting U2 around the UK, and managed to get the young band booked on the show via the producer Tony Hale.
Michealides remembers the recording session for this radio appearance, “I remember they did a track unreleased to this day called ‘Father is an Elephant’ and Bono wanted to have an echoey sound to the vocal so what he ended up doing was trailing a microphone wire up to the balcony and into the gent’s urinal and he sang in the gent’s toilet.”
The band record the session early in the day and they leave right away to get back to London for a show at the Marquee later that night. The radio show itself? We aren’t sure that it ever aired, and no recordings of the show have surfaced to date. But the band definitely recorded in the theatre.
