Show Details:
U2 play a show in Birmingham, England on the first leg of the Boy tour. They were booked for the show by the social secretary for the student union, and the show was held at Union Hall. There are reports that the sound suffered early in the show, as U2 (specifically Bono) decided to monkey with the sound as it had been set, and it took the sound guy some time into the concert to get the settings working.
The show features the usual snippets of “Cry” and “Send in the Clowns” during “The Electric Co.” The concert itself ends with the unreleased song, “Father Is an Elephant” a song U2 was working on for the October album, of which pieces would eventually become “Rejoice”. The song had been written for Bono’s father Bob. The band had introduced this unreleased song on this leg of the tour, and had played it at the end of the show a number of times throughout the tour. This show in Birmingham is the band’s last known performance of the song. Although it was likely played in the final shows of the tour as well.
Recordings of this show exist.
