Show Details:
U2 headline a show at the El Mocambo club in Toronto, Ontario. The show is general admission, with a ticket price of $3.50, although there are tables set up to sit on the sides. The club is limited to patrons over the age of 19.
Attendees to the show remember that this was an emotional performance, coming on the heels of John Lennon’s death. Although the full set is unknown, we know that Bono ended the show by singing “Give Peace a Chance” which would be added in as a snippet to “The Electric Co.” at later shows on the tour. We believe in Toronto the song was performed by itself, but it may have been a snippet of some sort.
A review of the show stated that “U2 could be the Led Zeppelin of the eighties.”
A local Toronto DJ, David Allen remembers the show at the El Mocambo as being not even half full. He had already been playing import records by U2 on his show, and had attended the show at the El Mocambo. After the show, he took U2 to another Toronto club, the Domino, where bands visiting Toronto would often hang out.
Before taking the stage at the El Mocambo, U2 would do a photo shoot in the empty club with photographer Peter Noble. Noble would also take the band to Allan Gardens for photos in the snow. Noble remembers that “all their singles were available as imports before Boy even came out, so there was a lot of anticipation for these shows.</em>
