Show Details:
U2’s first show in Munich takes place at the club known as the Sugar Shack. The club, once immortalized in the lyrics to the Queen song “Dragon Attack” was a popular club and a haunt of rock stars visiting the city. Little is known about U2’s own visit to perform at the establishment, and only a partial set list is known for this performance.
The show is a late one, starting after midnight, and U2 have imbibed some Bavarian Schnapps while waiting, and the band, tired from non-stop travel and touring, fall asleep in the dressing room before the show and manager, Paul McGuinness has to wake them prior to the show. Bono related the story during a 1987 performance in Munich, “The first time we played here we played a small club called The Sugar Shack. We walked onstage at about one o’clock in the morning and we had been drinking alcohol—Bavarian Schnapps! Because it was way past our bedtime we were all very drunk and in fact we fell asleep in the dressing room before we came on stage and our manager Paul McGuinness, was shaking us saying ‘You have the whole of Germany outside, you must wake up!’ And we said, ‘No, no..we want to sleep…’ But I didn’t know it was going to be like this! So now when we drink Bavarian alcohol, we drink it after the gig, not before!”
