Show Details:
U2 play the Bijou Café in Philadelphia with opening act, City Thrills. The show draws a crowd of about 250 people. Bono has just found out that Boy has charted in the US, and shares that news with the crowd, discussing how he was told it would be hard to get airplay: “I really believe that’s going to change, especially here in Philadelphia, you got some good radio here. The good news is that our first album Boy has just got into the charts today. It’s at 135 which is a start.”
A review in The Philadelphia Enquirer by Jack Lloyd offered a mixed review: “A group from Ireland called U2 blew into the Bijou Café last week with a high-powered brand of rock music. It was one of the Bijou’s “dance party” attractions, and a few people were actually dancing to the potent strains of U2. U2 came through with an infectious sound that is often lost on the group’s debut album for Island Records, “Boy,” which leans heavily on an “artsy” approach that misfires more often than it clicks. On stage, though, U2 demonstrated more than a little dedication to crisp execution and a high energy level. Unfortunately, the bulk of U2’s material falls far short of being memorable.”
Before the show Bono was interviewed on local television on KYW-TV. He spoke for about 10 minutes with Cyndy Drue, and later asked for a ride to the show, inviting the reporter to meet the band once they got to the venue, and inviting her to supper before the show (she declined the supper invite.)
Tickets were sold through Ticketron locations. Recordings of this show are known to exist.
