Show Details:
U2 play a show in Santa Monica, which is opened by The Suburban Lawns, fronted by Sue Tissue. The show is advertised to start at 8pm and tickets are priced at $7.50 in advance or $8.50 the day of the show. Romeo Void were originally due to open the show, but cancelled for an unknown reason. The show was promoted by KROQ 106.7 and Wolf and Rissmiller Concerts.
The show follows a night where Bono went and saw Ted Nugent perform at the Sports Arena, and during the show Bono mimic’s Nugent’s stage behavior, joking with the audience about all the rock and roll clichés that were present the night before in the show Bono had witnessed. “Thank you Los Angeles, you’re the greatest!” and other clichés are read from a paper Bono brought with him to the show.
Judy Zee reviewed the show for Data-Boy Magazine: “U2’s music is so vibrant and real, they send rushes out into the audience, they are alive and perform with gusto. They give fully of themselves. They have a lot to offer. Too bad they couldn’t be seen by half the people here. The ticket holders at the back of the Santa Monica Civic were moving and dancing despite the fact that they couldn’t see the band. Bono boyishly and gallantly bounded up the amplifier stack tot he top, carrying with him a big ol’ American flag. The spotlights followed this charade, for all to see a distinct drop of the flag into an abrupt darkness as he was helped off by his stage manager (who nearly dropped him, cute buns and all!)”
