Show Details:
U2 perform a short set for BBC Radio while in London. They record in front of a small studio audience at the Paris Theatre in London. The theatre is a former cinema, located at 12 Lower Regent Street in London. It was converted to a theatre by the BBC, and was used for recordings requiring an audience. The theatre seats 400, but it is unknown how many attended this taping.
The show aired on BBC’s In Concert show on October 3.
During “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” Bono includes the “ding-dong-dang-dong” references to “Frere Jacques” that he often uses in concert. During “I Will Follow” a lack of rehearsal is showing through as Bono seems to forget the words. “I was on the…I know…I know…I was…I know…I’m not sure…” at the end of the song he says “we were told you would be Japanese tourists.” Other problems creep into the performance. His voice isn’t strong during “Into the Heart” and he starts singing at the wrong time. The performance is broadcast regardless of the errors. “Twilight” does not feature the alternate opening verse that Bono had been using often at this time.
Although rough on some of the older material, the band puts together a strong performance of one of the new songs being released on October with their performance of “With a Shout.” It sounds much better than it had at the Slane Castle Festival the previous week. The other new song U2 play is “Rejoice”.
Paul Morley, writer for NME, is at this recording session.
The recordings session was for two bands, and the other band was After the Fire.
