Show Details:
U2 perform in Brighton at the Top Rank, with support from Comsat Angels. U2’s second album October was released in stores earlier in the day, and this is the first show played after that release. “Gloria” has been played on the radio for a couple of weeks at this point. The album will debut at #11 in the UK charts, with the extensive touring of the UK likely helping them reach that level.
The audience in Brighton is laid back and quiet early in the show. Bono does his best throughout the show to encourage the audience to get more into the show. This hits a peak with “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” when he hands the microphone to the audience to sing, or rather shout.
U2 includes “The Cry” at the start of “The Electric Co.” and as he’s been doing on shows this tour, in the usual spot where Bono would add a snippet he makes up his own lyrics instead. Tonight it is “I can see the sun inside, feel the sun inside tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight.” Picking up the guitar for “I Fall Down” Bono shows the crowd, and The Edge, the chords for the song. (The Edge is on keyboards for that song.) “Does anyone have anything to say for themselves?” Bono asks at the start of “11 O’Clock Tick Tock,” repeating it twice, foreshadowing his eventual handing of the microphone to the audience.
U2 Live lists an attendance of 2000 people at this show in Brighton.
