Show Details:

U2 return to North America for another round of shows in October 1981. The first stop is in Albany NY, returning to the club JB Scott’s where the band has played on two previous occasions. They will tour in the US until mid-December, when they return to Europe for a handful of shows in the UK and Ireland before returning to the US in 1982. Press for the shows list “From Ireland, A band that’s different, smart, manic, haunting, intense. And one of the most electrifying live acts in longer than you can remember.”

Pimm’s book, U2 Live lists the attendance for this show at 400, and says that after the shows in the Spring, the club is packed for the U2 show. The club had a capacity of approximately 600 so it was not a sell out, but a busy night.

Finishing “Gloria” Bono claims he’s been welcomed home. Bono is quiet tonight between songs, perhaps still tired from a late night seeing the Rolling Stones in New York City the night before. “This is Rejoice and we will, we will, rejoice…” introduces one of the new songs. “The Electric Co.” gets a bit of Bono singing about Chicago, breaking into “My Kind of Town” and later a snippet of “Send in the Clowns.” The song is introduced by the “Cry” instrumental, and at the end he tells the crowd, “I must say it’s good to be here” and telling the crowd it feels like they live here. “I Fall Down” opens with Bono telling the crowd he can play guitar and asking the band to stop so he can show the crowd.

At the start of the encore, after explaining the band took an encore break before everyone else does, Bono announces, “This is the first date on the US tour. Everybody else has a lot to live up to!” During “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” Bono asks if the Edge has broken a string, and continues to sing without the band declaring “told you I didn’t need you!”

Bono remembered back to the shows at JB Scott’s when he played Albany on June 2, 2001, during The Elevation Tour, “I have a very strong memory of being here in Albany 20 years ago, three times I think in the first year of touring the United States we came to Albany. It felt pretty good, I still have the t-shirt at home that says JB Scotts. Is that still here?” Bono did get a T-Shirt that said JB Scott’s on one of his trips here, and he’s seen wearing it in the video for “Gloria.”
