Show Details:
U2’s Lovetown tour started in Perth, Australia on September 21. This is the first of three nights in a row that U2 play the Perth Entertainment Centre. They are playing a number of smaller venues throughout the tour which leads to playing multiple nights to meet demand. Support for the concerts comes from B.B. King, who will also join U2 on stage during their own set. Australian band Wedding Parties Anything are also part of the support acts for this show. The show is promoted by Michael Coppel and 96FM. The start time is advertised as 7:30pm.
U2 arrived on the 9th of September in Australia, and started rehearsals the following day. The first full production rehearsal was scheduled at the Perth Entertainment Centre on September 18, 1989. Early in the day of the show on the 21st U2 soundchecks a number of songs, including “Desire” multiple times, and a number of instrumental pieces where the band just play with songs. In total they work on over 10 songs, and it is an extended soundcheck.
The show opens with “Hawkmoon 269.” “Desire” follows with snippets of “Not Fade Away” and “So You Want to Be A Rock ‘N Roll Star.” Bono addresses being away from Australia for so long by saying “Five years, feels like five minutes to me” as he introduces a cover of “All Along the Watchtower.”
As the first show of the tour several of the songs are played live for the first time ever. “Desire,” “Hawkmoon 269,” “All I Want is You,” “God Part II,” are all new tonight.
