Show Details:

U2 is delayed due to weather flying into Charlotte. As such the band arrive at the venue only shortly before showtime, and the set overall is shortened as U2 are also due to fly out again right after the show, spending less than five hours in total in the city. There has been rain all day and the fans waiting in line for the show have been in miserable conditions. Bono thanks the crowd for their patience, “Thanks for waiting around. Thank you for all those years. Thank you for coming out in the rain. We’ve been through a lot over the years and you have put up with us, so thank you!”

Like the two previous shows, PJ Harvey is unable to attend due to illness, and she’s replaced by Nelly Furtado tonight. Furtado will play tonight’s show as well as the next in Atlanta, before PJ Harvey rejoins the tour.

The show only has 19 songs. One of those is new, “Staring at the Sun” is played in full tonight, after being snippeted at previous shows on the tour. It takes the location “Discotheque” had been played at the first two shows, which is not played this evening. During band introductions the band is invited to the tip of the heart. Larry is called “the man who gave us our first job and never let us forget it”. Adam is called “The biggest instrument of U2” and “the poshest member of U2” but doesn’t travel down to the tip of the heart. The Edge is “the scientist of the band” and a “crouching tiger”.

The Edge has several technical problems during the evening, likely due to the lack of a sound check due to late arrival. During “With or Without You” Bono invites an audience member to join him on stage, and kisses her hand at the end of the song before returning her to the audience. “In A Little While” is dedicated to Daniel Lanois who is at the show tonight, and who has been traveling with the band this week.

Of the show, Willie Williams shares in his diary, “We did finally arrive in Charlotte and got to the venue about ten minutes before doors opened so it was all a bit of a mad panic. However, despite all of the above I really enjoyed the show. The crowd had a really peaceful vibe… I mean they made loads of noise and jumped up and down and all that good stuff, but there was a great spirit in the place. And I had four cameras again which made me very happy. The show is starting to develop a personality of its own now, I look forward to watching it develop.”
