Show Details:

Houston is the fourth stop on the Elevation tour.

PJ Harvey is recovered, and she plays her first show on the tour. Willie Williams shares in his tour diary, “Another good show tonight, made all the more special by the arrival of P.J.Harvey. She is back in full flight now. She was really REALLY great.”

The show has a set list very similar to the opening night in Fort Lauderdale. Other than a few snippets not much is different. The band has been working on the show during soundchecks trying to get everything right. They have also been playing with a new song at these checks, which is rehearsed again today.

The show is relatively straight forward, the band are starting to find their groove on these Elevation shows. “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” opens with Bono talking about friends, before dedicating it to “a friend we have lost along the way”, Michael Hutchence. Bono plays around with his own last name and the name of the city the band are in dedicating “The Sweetest Thing” to his wife, “Houston Texas. This is for Mrs. Hewson Texas!” And introducing “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” Bono jokes that no one knows the song because it’s on the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack which has “sold about 17 copies.”

The band introductions are done “old school”, part of reapplying for the job Bono says. Each member of the band is invited down to the tip of the heart. Larry “not so Junior” Mullen “hasn’t changed his haircut in twenty years”. Adam “Jazzman” Clayton is introduced as the band’s first manager and “no stranger to the catwalk” and The Edge is a “card-carrying genius” with Bono riffing on communications with the Apollo 13 astronauts and saying “Houston, we have a problem.”

Bono brings a girl onto the stage during “Bad” to dance with. Later during the encore he interacts with a group of fans in the stands who have brought the Irish flag with them to the show. He asks for the flag to be brought down to him. Finally receiving the flag Bono shasres, “I want to tell you about this flag. Normally when we take a flag like this out it used to bring great sorrow. I used to feel ashamed of this flag. But because of so many brave men and women over the last few years, I now take great pride with this flag.”

Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is seen in the VIP area.
