Show Details:

After several days of rehearsals in Barcelona, the tour is finally ready to start. Early in the day the band can be heard rehearsing some last songs, including “Vertigo”, “Walk On”, “One”, “Ultra Violet”, “Magnificent” and “Breathe”. They also work through the remix of “I’ll Go Crazy Tonight” twice.

Fans find that there are two different lines to enter the venue. These are marked on the ticket, and one line is significantly longer than the other, but it is the longer line that starts moving into the venue first. Upon entering the venue and seeing the stage up close for the first time, many are shocked at the size of the production. The show starts late in the evening, at 10pm local time, giving the sky a chance to darken.

The show includes seven songs from No Line on the Horizon under the claw, a four legged structure above the stage which features a round video screen that expands and contracts. Bono calls it their very own “space station” during the show.

Bono includes a snippet of “Movin’ On Up” during “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. During “Angel of Harlem” Bono includes “Man in the Mirror” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” for the recently departed Michael Jackson, and Bono stops to dedicate the song to Jackson calling him an “unspeakable talent”. Jackson’s songs are being heard all over Barcelona as fans all over the world come to terms with his death. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is included with “Walk On.”

Ahead of playing “Unknown Caller” U2 go live to space in a live link to the International Space Station. The live link up drags out a bit, and in future appearances the interaction with the space station is pre-taped. During tonight’s concert one of the astronauts is signed up for the One Campaign while in space. The astronauts also hold up sheets of paper which read “The future needs a big kiss.” Larry Mullen, asking if the earth is really round is told “That’s classified.”

“Sunday Bloody Sunday” contains a unique rap that Bono appears to be making up on the spot.

During “Walk On” Bono urges the crowd to put on the masks they found in the stadium. The masks show the face of Aung San Suu Kyi. They were handed out by the thousands as fans entered the stadium. They are also tucked into every single seat in the stadium. They quickly become littered all through the venue. The band even has tour staff walk the outer ring of the stage, showing people to put on their masks. Fans do not seem to put them on during the show, and the piece falls a bit flat in the stadium.

Ahead of “One” Bono puts on a jersey from the Barcelona football club that calls the stadium home. The performance of “One” is a difficult one, with the band stopping and restarting the performance.

The show is opened by Snow Patrol. Special merchandise for the show includes a dark grey T-shirt with the dates of the show in Barcelona and a architect’s diagram of the venue with the stage in place. A poster is also available feature the tour logo above a photo of the band, with the city, dates and venue name at the top. Celebrities spotted at the first show include actor Hugh Jackman and performer LL Cool J.

The concert tour, and this show are announced on March 9, 2009. A presale for the fan club starts on March 21 for the longest subscribers (Horizon), followed by Breathe subscribers on March 22 and new subscribers (Boots) on March 23. The general sale happens on March 25 via Ticketmaster, Tick Tack Ticket, and FNAC stores. Tickets for the show at Camp Nou sold out in just 54 minutes, and a second show was added for July 2.
