U2 play a second show in Amsterdam ArenA. The show was announced after the first show sold out in just fifteen minutes.
For the second show in Amsterdam U2 mix up the set a bit and introduces a couple of new songs not played in a while. Both “Until the End of the World”, “Bad” and “Elevation” make their tour debut tonight in Amsterdam. There are other changes, the band plays around with moving “One” earlier in the setlist. It appears midway through the first part of the show, instead of in the encore where it usually appears. Fans are happy with the changes, saying the first show was great, but tonight blew the roof off the venue. (There is a roof, but it remained intact!)
Ahead of the show the band soundcheck “Until the End of the World” and “Bad”. Willie mentions the new songs were “in the pocket” and the band were waiting for a good place to work them in, as adding anything means something else usually leaves the set. Tonight three songs get dropped from the show that have been at each show so far. “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “The Unforgettable Fire” and “Unknown Caller” are the songs dropped to make room for the new additions. All three of the new additions will make appearances throughout the remainder of the tour leg.
The band also work in snippets throughout the show. “Amsterdam” and “A Change Is Gonna Come” appear in “Elevation”. “Desire” has the expected (at this point) Michael Jackson snippets, “Billie Jean” and “Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough”. “Break On Through” appears in “Until the End of the World” and “Reverend Black Grape” appears in “City of Blinding Lights and in I’ll Go Crazy”. A snippet of “Kinky Afro” also appears in the latter. “Rock the Casbah” appears in “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” appears during “Walk On”. The night before a group of fans held up signs requesting “40” and got Bono’s attention. He includes a few snippets tonight, at the end of “Where the Streets Have No Name” and during “Bad”. “Fool to Cry” also appears during “Bad”. “Drowning Man” also gets included in “Moment of Surrender”, the band have been rehearsing the song for the tour, but it never makes it into the show beyond the odd short snippet. Bono also includes the longer “Hear Us Coming” verse during “One”.
Snow Patrol who have been opening most of the shows so far on the tour open tonight as well. They will take a few nights off and don’t make the journey to Dublin with U2.
