Show Details:

After three nights in Dublin, U2 take their U2360 tour to Gothenburg, Sweden. They do two shows in Gothenburg, Sweden at Ullevi Stadium. Snow Patrol rejoin the tour for the shows in Sweden after not playing any of the three shows in Dublin. The venue has low ends on both sides, and there’s a clear view into the stadium from the surrounding areas.

There are worries that some of the sound and video equipment won’t make it from Dublin in time, as residents near Croke Park picketed the stadium as the band was packing up blocking trucks from leaving the venue. In the end the trucks are allowed to leave, and although tight, the set up in Gothenburg goes smoothly and is ready before show time.

The shows at Ullevi set an attendance record in the stadium. The record was previously held by the popular Swedish group Gyllene Tider, set in 2004.

It’s cold and windy. Willie Williams explains in his U2.com diary, “By show-time it was blowing a gale, freezing cold and not very dark. We decided to go with a set list including Mysterious Ways and Until the End of the World early on, to inject an extra bit of rock on a chilly night.”

Tonight a fan organized event with fans being requested to wear white and to wave white flags, fabric, balloons and papers from the floor and stands. As the band take the stage, and Larry starts “Breathe” the stadium becomes white throughout. Willie Williams shared, “The band came on stage to a sea of white flags. The audience waving pieces of white fabric, by way of welcome, I assume. It looked great and clearly took the band by surprise and lifted the mood instantly. It turned out to be a great night which did not stop when the show ended.”

The band do cut to the space station at tonight’s show.

The show includes a number of small snippets of songs, with “Rain” appearing in “Beautiful Day”, “Norwegian Wood” appearing in “Mysterious Ways”, “She’s A Mystery to Me” included as part of “One” and “Break on Through” appearing in “Until the End of the World”. During “Desire” the band includes “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow”, as well as “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”. Later in the show “Rock the Casbah” appears in “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” appears in “Walk On” and “All You Need is Love” appears during “Where the Streets Have No Name”.

“One” has moved back up in the set, appearing early in the main set, and “Where the Streets Have No Name” closed the main set tonight.

Ahead of “Walk On” Bono notices a Brazilian fan holding up a sign and asks what it says. The sign holds a quote from Aung San Suu Kyi, “Fear is a habit. I am not afraid”.

Early in the day U2 soundchecked “Breathe”, “Until the End of the World” and “No Line on the Horizon”.
