Show Details:
The next city that U2 visit with the U2360 tour is Zagreb, the 11th city on the tour. It is U2’s first visit to Croatia, and they play Stadium Maksimir. The first show is opened by Snow Patrol and The Hours. In reverse of most shows, the show for Zagreb on August 10 was announced first, and this first show was announced only after that show went on sale.
Happy birthday is sung again for The Edge between “Until the End of the World” and “Stay (Faraway, So Close)”. It was his birthday the previous day, and celebrated in Nice, but Bono continues the celebrations tonight, and champagne is brought onto stage to celebrate. He also includes a snippet of “Happy Birthday” at the end of “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
Introducing “One” Bono thanks the crowd dedicating the song “to everyone in this region who have had their warm hears broken by cold ideas”. In the song itself, he includes the extended verse, “Hear Us Coming” and the song ends with a bit of “Unchained Melody”. “One” is featured early in the set, and not at the end of the main set as it has on some nights.
Snippets tonight include “Miss Sarajevo” in “Magnificent”. It’s a nod to neigbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina, where U2 visited in 1997 as part of the PopMart tour. “Beautiful Day” includes the Beatles’ “Blackbird”. “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” appears during “Vertigo” and “I’ll Go Crazy” gets snippets of “I Don’t Want to Join The Army” at the start and end of the song. “Rock the Casbah” pops up in “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” appears in “Walk On” and “All You Need is Love” appears in “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
During “Beautiful Day” Bono also included some English verses of the poem “Dubravka”, written by Croatian poet, Ivan Gundulic.
In his tour diary for U2.com, Willie Williams shares, “Zagreb doesn’t have the newest stadium in the world but it benefited from being packed to the rafters with a very enthusiastic crowd, so a good time was had by all.” In the Croatian Times Marija Andric shares, “Irish band ‘U2’ gave a spectacular two-hour concert yesterday evening in front of around 63,000 fans at Maksimir stadium in Zagreb” and “Besides the great music, fans were thrilled by the 55-metre-high, spectacular rotating stage. As Bono said, the idea was not to impress anyone but to bring the band closer to the audience.”
