Show Details:

The second night in New Jersey was originally sold as the first of two shows. But when a conflict happened, the second show was moved ahead two days. So what was sold as the first night in Jersey, has now become the second night in New Jersey instead. Muse is back again tonight for their second show on the tour.

Tonight is a record attendance for the venue. The previous record was held by Pope John Paul II when he visited the stadium in 1995. But U2 break that record tonight. Bono mentions the record during the show, and also points out that this is probably the last time that U2 will play the building, as it is being torn down and a new stadium being constructed on the same site.

The band continue to play with the flow of the set list. The four songs from No Line on the Horizon are now broken up with “Mysterious Ways” and “Beautiful Day” falling in between them. During the show Bono flubs “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” mixing up verses and starting out with the second verse instead of the first, but tries to make a fix by going back to the first. Bono brings a young boy onto the stage during “City of Blinding Lights” as he has done in other cities, and he lets the boy try on his sunglasses, and walks him around the outer ring of the stage.

Snippets tonight include “She’s a Rainbow” and “Blackbird” during “Beautiful Day”, “Stand By Me” at the end of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “Mofo” as part of “City of Blinding Lights”, “It’s Only Rock And Roll (But I Like It)” during “Vertigo”. “I’ll Go Crazy” gets snippets of “Miss You” and “Rocks Off”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” gets a snippet of “Rock the Casbah” and “Walk On” gets “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Finally “Where the Streets Have No Name” includes “All You Need is Love” and “Amazing Grace”. Bono also includes the longer “Hear Us Coming” lines in “One” tonight.

Willie Williams in his U2.com tour diaries mentions “we went on to have such a great show that it would be a great waste. Tonight was one of those nights where everything came together. The old Giants Stadium is a great sounding building and Joe was clearly on a roll. The band were on cracking form, the set list was perfect for the audience…it was magical.”

During the show Bono mentions Mick Jagger, Phil Ramone, Rick Rubin and Kanye West. Jagger is reported to have been enjoying Bono’s snippets laughing and smiling each time he heard one. All are apparently in the house this evening. Actress Nicole Kidman is also present at the show, and gets a special job for the evening, pushing the button that starts the smoke on the claw that signals the start of the show.

Soundchecks today include “Elevation” and “Mofo”. But “Mofo” never makes it into the 360 tour shows. (Thanks to U2Start for the set list information.)
