Show Details:
Next up is Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, at the University of Virginia. It’s the first time that U2 have played in Charlottesville, and they bring Muse with them as an opening act. And U2 are seen in the crowd taking in Muse’s opening set from various locations around the building.
Although most of the crowd is inside the stadium, a number are also gathered outside on a hill beyond the fences surrounding the venue. A couple of hundred students gather to watch the show from this free vantage point. The crowd inside the stadium seems quieter than at most shows, and Bono has to work to get them going this evening.
The band tonight are introduced as college stereotypes, or his roommates as Bono calls them. The Edge is the nerd of the group, Larry is the jock of the group, the captain of the football team, and Adam is the stud, the friend to cheerleaders. And Bono calls himself the college dropout, still learning from the other three members of the band.
A fan does try to climb onto the stage as the bridge goes over him. He gets up behind Adam, but security is quick to push him back to the floor. Another more positive interaction happens when a girl who has made a scarf gets to give it to Bono and he wears it through the next few minutes. During “Your Blue Room” Frank De Winne appears on screen and recites the last verse of the song as have been done in other shows.
During the show Bono references Thomas Jefferson on a couple of occasions. Not only the third president of the USA, he also founded the University of Virginia where U2 are playing this evening. Bono even stops to ask if Mr. Jefferson is in the house tonight on one occasion. And during the show Bono adds a snippet of “The Hands that Built America” to “Beautiful Day”.
Other snippets during the show include “Movin’ On Up” during “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” and “I Want to Take You Higher” during “I’ll Go Crazy”, “People Get Ready” during “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during “Walk On”. In the encore “Where the Streets Have No Name” has snippets of “Amazing Grace” and “All You Need is Love”.
In the Charlottesville Daily Progress Brian McNeill shares, “While the show received a rapturous response from the crowd, there was a bit of grumbling from some concertgoers over the traffic gridlock and long walks to Scott Stadium from far-flung (and expensive) parking lots across UVa’s campus. Police also had to investigate at least one report of a drunken fan in the upper decks urinating on the unfortunate souls below.”
“City of Blinding Lights” is one of the songs soundchecked in the afternoon.
