Show Details:
Vancouver marks the end of the U2360 dates originally announced back in March. But already two additional legs have been announce in 2010, with tickets already starting to go on sale for these additional shows. The Vancouver show takes place in BC Place, which is a domed stadium, with a permanent roof. It is one of the few stops on the U2360 tour where the stage is enclosed. As happens in other places where this is the case, there are a number of issues with the sound this evening. Black Eyed Peas open the show.
There are some sound issues in Vancouver beyond the domed venue. Bono’s microphone is dropping out in a number of places, and his voice is also strained. He struggles to finish “Elevation”.
After “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” Bono and the band sing Happy Birthday to Bill Gates who is at the show this evening. During “In A Little While” the ISS video disappears from the screen but Frank De Winne’s voice can still be heard finishing off the lyrics of the song.
For “City in Blinding Lights” Bono pulls a little girl out of the audience and walks her around the stage, before dropping to his knee to sing to her. At the end of the performance he lets her try on his glasses before she’s returned to her family.
At one point during the show, a fan attempts to get on stage by climbing up the backside of the stage and rushing towards the front of the stage. He is met by a strong security prescence who remove him quickly from the stage.
During “Walk On” it is the tour crew who wear the masks of Aung San Suu Kyi and hold up the lights on stage. At most stops around the tour the lights have been held up by volunteers for One and Amnesty International, but today the tour staff get a moment in the spotlight.
At the end of “Moment of Surrender” Bono hangs his jacket of lights to his microphone and it ascends to the rafters.
Although there are few changes from the previous shows, the Cosmo encore using the Zoo Baby is not used, instead the band go back to the electronic voices reading the WH Auden poem “Stop All The Clocks”.
Snippets today include “Where is the Love?” as part of “Mysterious Ways”, “Blackbird” as part of “Beautiful Day” and “Stand By Me” at the end of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. “Mofo” is included as part of “City of Blinding Lights”, “Two Tribes” appears as part of “I’ll Go Crazy” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” appears in “Walk On”. “Amazing Grace” opens “Where the Streets Have No Name”. During “One” Bono includes the longer “Hear Us Coming” verse.
The Edge’s parents are at the show in Vancouver, and Bono includes her in a list of thank yous, “for being our first crew member”.
Although the tour is finished for 2009 there are two additional performances coming up. The band will participate in the 25th anniversary celebration of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York, and then they will also do a free concert at Brandeburg Tor in Germany as part of the MTV European Music Awards in the first week of November.
Heard sound checked, but not played tonight was the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.”
