Show Details:
The next show is in Vienna, Austria. Like Moscow, the band are playing a single show in Vienna. An attendance record is set at Ernst Happel Stadium with the show tonight. The show is wet during the day, the rain has impacted the last six shows. It stops by showtime but the temperatures drop and it’s a very cold evening for a show outside. OneRepublic is appearing at the show as the opening act, their first show on the tour to date.
Bono isn’t feeling well according to many at the show, but he is talkative, filling space while technical issues plague the show. His guitar fails during “Mysterious Ways”, he has volume issues at various points, and he has to change out his guitar at another point of the show. Some of the technical issues are blamed on the wet and cold conditions of the show tonight.
There are some last minute changes to the set list. The original set list has “Every Breaking Wave” or “North Star” listed after “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and then lists “Glastonbury”. “Glastonbury” missed the last show in Moscow, and by showtime, misses this show as well. It isn’t played for the remainder of the tour. The final decision on “Every Breaking Wave” or “North Star” is “Every Breaking Wave”, a new song which has only been played once before. The song is one of the new songs that will eventually be released, on 2014’s Songs of Innocence.
“In a Little While” follows “Every Breaking Wave” and Bono takes a moment during the song to reflect on his marriage with Ali, singing, “when you’ve known her 28 years” – their anniversary has just passed.
During introductions tonight Larry Mullen is called a Friday night man, Edge is the band’s Saturday night man, and Adam Clayton is a Sunday night man, “watching the Discovery channel.”
“Ultra Violet” is back in the encore, and “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” takes the evening off. Snippets include “Rain” during “Beautiful Day”, “Rock Me Amadeus” during “Vertigo”, “Discotheque” during “I’ll Go Crazy”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during “Walk On” and both “Amazing Grace” and “All You Need is Love” during “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
In the afternoon the crew is heard sound checking but the band is not present. They do instrumental checks using a number of songs that are part of the show.
Tickets for this show go on sale on October 3, 2009. U2.Com presales start on September 29.
