Show Details:
U2 move on to Coimbra, Portugal for two shows. They are playing at Estadio Cidade de Coimbra. Interpol joins U2 to open both shows.
The stadium is part of the University of Coimbra. It is one of the oldest universities in the world. As he takes the stage tonight Bono is chanting “Briosa, Briosa!” which is a nickname (“the Stout One”) of the local University football team.
Duirng the band introductions Bono mentions that none of the band have gone to university. He asks each of the band members what they would have done had they gone to University. The Edge replies “I don’t know if I would have lasted, but I would have fallen back on my original career plan, a male model.” Larry doesn’t entertain the question saying “I fancy myself a professional musician.” Adam shares “I’d like to try my hand at Chemical Engineering.” Bono wraps it up, “Me? I am what I would have been. A traveling salesman. I sell songs with this group, my three best friends.”
The show tonight includes three new songs, not yet released by the band. The band takes the stage to the new, and mostly instrumental “Return of the Stingray Guitar”, and in the middle of the set they include both “North Star” and “Mercy”. Tonight will be the last appearance of “North Star” on the third leg. It will next be performed in Australia.
During the encore the song that rotates is “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” tonight.
Snippets tonight include “Let it Be” as part of “Mysterious Ways”, “Anthem” during “Until the End of the World”, “One Love” at the end of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “Teenage Kicks” during “Vertigo”. “I’ll Go Crazy” gets two Frankie Goes to Hollywood snippets, “Relax” and “Two Tribes”. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” appears at the end of “Walk On” and “Amazing Grace” leads into “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
In his diary for U2.com, Willie Williams shares, “It was a perfect, warm night with the band serving up yet another killer show to an incredible audience. Maybe we really have woken up on the Joshua Tree tour, where we rather took it for granted that entire stadiums-full of people would jump up and down in unison for hours on end. A man could get complacent.”
Tickets for the first show in Coimbra went on sale on October 17, 2009, with a U2.com presale which started on October 13.
