Show Details:
The U2360 show returns to Italy for the final show on this third leg. Tonight they are performing at Stadio Olimpico. This leg of the tour opened two months ago in Turin, Italy. After tonight the band will take a short break before the tour moves to New Zealand and Australia. For this final show in Rome, the opening act is once again Interpol.
Early in the show, Bono’s pants split. He quickly covers up by tying a shirt around his waist, covering the rip in the back. Guess it’s a good thing tonight is the end of this leg of the tour.
During “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” something “magical” happens. Fans around the stadium hold up coloured cards. One side of the stadium now looks like the Italian flag, at the back is the word “ONE” spelled out in red on a white background, and down the other side is the Irish tri-colour flag. The whole thing was organized by U2Place.com, and it leaves Bono saying “Viva Italia!” when he sees it from the stage. Afterwards he shas, “Che notte magica”, or “A magical night!” Willie Williams in his tour diary for U2.com shares, “One highly unusual element though, was a ‘fan initiative’ of epic scale. During Still Haven’t Found about three quarters of the people in the stadium grandstands picked up coloured cards (a la Soviet Olympics) forming a giant Italian flag at one end of the stadium, a giant Irish flag at the other and the word ‘ONE’ in ever such big letters down the side. Fair play to you, Rome.” Bono shares, “I for one, feel very fortunate to be standing on this stage with my three best friends.”
The band has been debuting new material throughout this leg of the tour, and have now performed six new songs, not yet released. Two of them make it into the setlist tonight. “Return of the Stingray Guitar” opens the show, and “Mercy” comes mid-way through the opening set, following the second only appearance of “Bad” on this leg of the tour.
During the encore the band performs “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill” me in the rotational slot of the show. Bono also sings “Happy Birthday” after “With or Without You” to long time friend and collaborator Gavin Friday who is in the audience tonight. Bono also includes the extended verse singing “Shine Like Stars” tonight during “With or Without You”, a sure sign that Bono has been enjoying the show as much as the fans seem to be.
Snippets tonight include “Anthem” during “Until the End of the World” and a snippet of “All I Want is You” during “Bad”. “Teenage Kicks” shows up in “Vertigo” and “I’ll Go Crazy” includes “Relax” and “Two Tribes”. “Get Up Stand Up” is part of “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is part of “Walk On”, “Senza Una Donna” is part of “One” and “Amazing Grace” opens “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
Sound checked in the afternoon were “Vertigo”, “Bad”, “City of Blinding Lights”, “Until the End of the World” (Partial), “Elevation” and “Moment of Surrender”.
This show went on sale on December 4, 2009, after a U2.com presale that started on December 2.
