Bono and The Edge appear with Spider-Man star Reeve Carney on American Idol and debut “Rise Above,” a song from the musical.
Bono and The Edge join Reeve Carney to perform “Rise Above” from the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical, which they co-wrote. This is the season finale of American Idol which is filmed live at the Nokia Theatre. For this season of the show Interscope Records has replaced Sony as the official partner label of the show, and Jimmy Iovine is acting as an in-house mentor to the contestants.
The performers are introduced by Ryan Seacrest, and as the lights go down a Spider-Man swings down from the back of the theatre landing mid-way along the audience, before bouncing back into the sky. The Edge and Reeve Carney start the song in front of a red glowing web which has been set up on the stage.
Carney does the first verse, before Bono comes and joins him on stage. For the remainder of the song Bono and Reeve Carney switch back and forth between the verses. There is a small audience of fans at the edge of the stage in front of the judges panel, and a larger audience seated behind the judges. Judges for this season of American Idol are Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) and Randy Jackson.
At the end of the performance, Spider-man once again drops down from the sky above the judges table. He hangs in front of Jennifer Lopez, who pulls his mask up, reminiscent of a kiss from the recent Spider-Man movies. But instead of a kiss she giggles, and Spider-Man swings away.
“Rise Above” includes the lyric “When there’s no them, only us”, which U2 will later use as part of “Invisible” and which Bono has used in “One” at times.
On the same evening the show airs, the track is made available on iTunes. It debuts at #74 on the Hot 100 countdown in Billboard.
