Show Details:
U2 play a single night at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD. This show is one of the shows that the band was able to add when the tour was rescheduled due to Bono’s back surgery. There was no show planned for Baltimore when the 2010 dates were postponed. For tonight’s show, Florence and the Machine join U2 as the opening act on the tour. This is the final show before U2 head to the UK to perform at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival.
The show after U2 put their set list through the blender sees them continuing to work on transitions and some of the newer additions to the show. “The Fly” introduced for the second night in Anaheim is back for Baltimore this evening. The band open with four songs from Achtung Baby tonight, compared to the five which opened the second night in Anaheim. Both “One” and “Where the Streets Have No Name” have slid back to the encore positions they usually hold in the set list. “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” remains in the show tonight instead of “All I Want is You”.
Snippets tonight include “The Promised Land” during “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” during “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)”, and “Space Oddity” during “Beautiful Day”. “I’ll Go Crazy” includes “Miss You”, “Discotheque”, “Life During Wartime” and “Psycho Killer”. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is part of “Walk On”, “Amazing Grace” opens “Where the Streets Have No Name” and ends with “All You Need is Love”. “Jungleland” is part of “Moment of Surrender” for Clarence Clemons who recently passed away.
Erik Maza writes in The Baltimore Sun, “The concert hit its stride around 10 p.m., when the band played “Vertigo,” maybe because it’s one of their most recognizable recent songs and maybe because the alcohol from the afternoon tailgaiting was finally making a difference. “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” was certainly the night’s emotional peak, milked here for all its possible relevance by being played over news images of the Arab Spring.” He also writes, “But there were great moments to compensate for those that were cringe-worthy. “Moment of Surrender,” dedicated to Clarence Clemons, was moving and “Where the Streets Have No Name” was undeniably beautiful; without a doubt, the concert’s highlight.”
Ahead of the show tonight U2 sound checked “Mysterious Ways”, “The Fly”, “Even Better Than the Real Thing” and “40”. “40” is not performed in the main show tonight.
Both Nancy Pelosi and actor Matt Damon are at the show tonight.
