Show Details:
The second night in Vancouver, opening their newest tour, sees U2 return to the stage that The Edge fell off of the night before. Originally the shows were announced in pairs, with plans for very different shows from night one to night two, but that hasn’t come to fruition, and tonight’s show while having some differences, isn’t the expected very different show. As part of the announcement of the tour Bono had shared, “We are going to try to have a completely different feeling from night one to night two, and have some fun playing with the idea of innocence and experience. More to be revealed!”, but this hasn’t happened. The New York Times explained, “The initial idea was to work up two entirely different concerts, but U2 worried about leaving out staples or having fans think they’d gotten the second-best show. As of last week, it planned instead to have a relatively fixed first half and a varying second one — separated, for the first time on a U2 tour, by an intermission.”
The new songs added into the show tonight included “Bad”, “California”, “Miracle Drug”, “One” and “Angel of Harlem”. Songs dropped tonight from the first night included “Out of Control”, “Desire”, “The Sweetest Thing”, “The Troubles” and “City of Blinding Lights”. “Beautiful Day” shifts from the encore into the main set list tonight as well.
One additional song is added. It has been announced that B.B. King has died. The band practice “When Love Comes to Town” in rehearsal in the afternoon and debut it in the show this evening. The song, recorded for Rattle and Hum featured B.B. King. Like the previous night the band goes live on Meerkat, pulling an audience member up to stream the song from on the stage. Bono ends the song by sharing “The thrill will never be gone”.
Vancouver filmmaker Patrick Stark was originally tipped to be joining the band to perform with U2. It was reported that with the death of B.B. King, Stark was bumped from the show. Stark has been working on a film called One Life No Regrets detailing his attempt to overcome stage fright. He met Bono earlier in the month, and asked to join the band on stage, and Bono agreed.
The show is still being fine tuned overall, and the punk rock intermission is shorter this evening between sets. Bono seems to be in good spirits this evening and more relaxed, even cracking jokes at the expense of The Edge, telling the audience “Edge downloaded himself into the audience last night without permission” making light of his fall the night before. “Bad” is a show stopper tonight, making it’s tour debut. The tube lights come up from the stage, lighting the entire stage for the song.
As with the first night, many representatives from the music press worldwide are in attendance, as is filmmaker Lian Lunson.
The tour was announced on December 3, 2014, with tickets going on sale on Monday December 8. Presales for U2.com members started on December 4, 2014 with subscribers who joined prior to September 9 being part of the Experience group, and new subscribers, who joined after September 9 being part of the Innocence group. Both Vancouver shows were announced from the start, and both went on sale at the same time.
