Show Details:
This is U2’s fourth show at The Forum in Inglewood, of five shows in total that they will play in this venue. The band do a lengthy sound check in the afternoon to work on some songs, and to ready a new one for the show tonight. Even with the soundcheck, there are still changes made after the set list is chosen.
The first change is “The Electric Co.” the second show in the show. The set list seen prior to the start of the show had listed “Out of Control” instead. The other change came at the end of the show. The set list had included “One” as the final song, however, “40” is played instead, appearing for just the second time for this tour. The song is dedicated to Dennis Sheehan, the tour manager who passed away earlier in the month. Bono shares the story of how Dennis would go into the crowd at shows to get the crowds to sing at the end of the show. He also shares that some of Dennis’ relatives are at the show this evening. Bono shares that “40” will “always be his song.”
One change that is on the set list? “All I Want is You” makes its tour debut tonight. The song is played near the end of the second act between “Beautiful Day” and “With or Without You”. With “Angel of Harlem” and “When Love Comes to Town” also in the set list tonight, the show is heavy on Rattle and Hum selections.
Two fans are brought on stage during “Angel of Harlem”. A female fan films the band, which is displayed on the large screen and goes out over the internet via Meerkat. A young boy is also brought up on stage, and Bono lets him wear his sunglasses while on stage, and gives them to him at the end of the show.
At the show tonight is John Densmore, the former drummer with The Doors, who is attending his first U2 show. Densmore speaks with Larry Mullen backstage, and later meets with Bono, who adds “Break on Through” to “The Electric Co.” in honour of Densmore being at the show. Chris Martin from Coldplay is also in attendance (and has been for most of the LA shows) and Bono also includes a snippet of “Yellow” later in the show during “Beautiful Day”. Others at the show include Irving Azoff and his wife Shelli, and Bobby Shriver.
Other snippets tonight include “Send in the Clowns” and “I Can See For Miles” during “The Electric Co”, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” during “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Love and Peace or Else” during “Bullet the Blue Sky”. In the second act, “Mysterious Ways” has a snippet of Bowie’s “Young Americans”. “Bullet the Blue Sky” has its usual “19” reference, and “The Hands That Built America” appears between “Bullet” and “Pride”. “Beautiful Day” also has a “California (There is No End to Love)” snippet, as does “Where the Streets Have No Name”. “Mother and Child Reunion” is in place as the intro to “Streets”
The tour was announced on December 3, 2014, with tickets going on sale on Monday December 8. Presales for U2.com members started on December 4, 2014 with subscribers who joined prior to September 9 being part of the Experience group, and new subscribers, who joined after September 9 being part of the Innocence group. The first four Inglewood shows were announced from the start, and all went on sale at the same time. A fifth show was announced later.
The soundcheck earlier in the day included “All I Want is You”, “California (There is no End to Love)”, “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)”, “When Love Comes to Town” and “Raised by Wolves”.
