Show Details:

Montreal’s Bell Centre is the home to four shows on the tour. This is the third of four shows in the city. Like the first two nights on the tour, the crowd is loud this evening, and those who have seen multiple shows on the tour comment about how much louder it has been than elsewhere so far.

Although on the set list the previous night, and not played, “Volcano” makes an appearance tonight, after being sound checked in the afternoon. It is only the third performance of the song on this tour. “The Troubles” also makes an appearance tonight, which is also making it’s third appearance on the tour. “Ordinary Love” was on the set list after “Volcano” but is not played tonight, instead the band plays “Desire” with a fan from the audience, Brian, not only playing guitar but taking on vocals with Bono. A female fan pulled up during “Mysterious Ways” broadcasts “Desire” on Meerkat to the internet. Tonight’s set list is made up of eight songs from Songs of Innocence, a full 1/3 of the show.

Bono talks about his visit to Ottawa in between the second and third shows. He claims the first question he got from a Member of Parliament was “Where is the Edge?” and Bono shares that he wanted to answer “He’s everywhere!” Bono shares, “The world needs more Canada!” a phrase he’s been using often of late, and thanks Canada for their support of the One Campaign.

There’s excitement at the end of the show. During “Where the Streets Have No Name” he gestures to bring someone onto the stage, and multiple people take the offer. Seeing fans climbing onto stage others jump onto the stage as well until there are around 40 fans on the stage with the band. Bono asks them to sit, so the band can finish the song, and finish the show. During “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” Bono stops one fan who is taking photos telling her to not “photograph the moment. Be in the moment, sing in the moment!” The song ends with “People Have the Power” and security helps fans leave the stage as U2 leave.

Bono includes references to “Send in the Clowns” and “I Can See for Miles” during “The Electric Co. “Until The End of the World” has a brief reference to “Love and Peace or Else”. “Anthem” by Leonard Cohen appears between “Volcano” and “Every Breaking Wave” and again during “Bullet the Blue Sky”, Montreal is the city where Cohen was born. “The Hands That Built America” has its usual place as a segue between “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. The Ramones’ “I Remember You” appears in “Beautiful Day” and Cohen’s “Anthem” appears again during “With or Without You”. Bono sings a bit of Paul Simon’s “Mother and Child Reunion” in the intro to “Where the Streets Have No Name” which also contains a reference to “California (There is No End to Love)”. And during “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” Bono adds some of the lyrics from “People Have the Power”.

The soundcheck in the afternoon included “Volcano”, “Iris”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)” early in the day but the band returned just before showtime to work on another song, “The Crystal Ballroom”. The song could be heard by (RED) Zone ticket holders waiting to go into the show, and a small handful of fans were accidentally allowed into the arena and allowed to watch the full song.

Actress Jennifer Garner is at the show this evening.

The third and fourth night in Montreal were announced on December 9 after the first two nights sold out, with presales starting on December 10 and a general sale starting on December 15. Tickets were tied to the credit card used for purchase, and one scanned their card to enter the venue.
