Show Details:
The Innocence and Experience tour stops for five shows in Chicago’s United Center. This is the fifth and final show in the city. The band has family and friends with them for this round of shows in Chicago, and many are seen throughout the five nights. Bono who was under the weather for the first two shows, but seems to have bounced back vocally for the later shows.
The shows in Chicago have seen a number of new songs added to the shows with “Gloria” and “The Crystal Ballroom” both making appearances in earlier shows. “Gloria” makes its second appearance on the tour tonight. A number of songs reappear tonight, including “California (There is No End to Love)” which has only been played three times this tour and has been missing since the shows in Los Angeles at the end of May. “40”, “Bad”, “Ordinary Love” all make appearances tonight.
Ahead of “Ordinary Love” Bono takes some time to introduce the song, speaking about how the band have been “working for” Mandela since they were in their teens, doing their first anti-apartheid show when they were 18. He also speaks about Archbishop Tutu, another hero of the bands, and shares “it was the Arch’s wedding anniversary yesterday with Leah his missus, 60th wedding anniversary. That’s pretty cool!” He finishes by pointing out the song came second at the Oscars.
Bono shares that the show is “the end of an incredible 10 days” and that “wherever you are from Pride parades all the way to the 4th of July, the Irish are with you and your families.”
Ahead of the final song, someone throws a Chicago Blackhawks jersey onto the stage. The jersey, belonging to Patrick Kane, leads Bono to quote a Springsteen song, “Adam Raised A Cain”. “40” is dedicated to Jerry Garcia. Garcia has been gone from this earth for a while now, but his old band, members of the Grateful Dead are coming to town and will play the next three nights at Chicago’s Soldier Field celebrating the band’s 50th anniversary.
Chef Mario Batali is at the show and gets a shoutout from Bono for his work with (RED). Many of the band’s family members are at the show, including Bono’s wife Ali, and Edge’s son and wife, Levi and Morleigh. Mike Mills, the former bassist with R.E.M. is also at the show tonight.
This final show for Chicago was announced much later than the others, which were announced in December. This show was announced on February 3, 2015, with a pre-sale for U2.com members starting on February 4, and a general sale starting on February 10.
