Show Details:

After five shows in Chicago, the Innocence and Experience tour returns to Canada for the third and final set of shows in that country. They will play two shows in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre, and this is the first of two shows.

The set list tonight sees “Out of Control” being played in the early rotational slot, and “Elevation” being played later in the show. “Bad” is played later in the show as well, and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” planned to close the shows.

Tonight Bono is looking back at U2’s history in Toronto. Bono talks about their first show in the city, and how they visited the day after John Lennon had been murdered, sharing that Lennon’s songs helped him gt through his teens. The show has a few Lennon related snippets throughout the show, including “Give Peace A Chance” which Bono had sung at that show back in 1980. Bono shares that Lennon is “still singing in my ear.”

There’s also a bit of a fan celebration tonight. Jessica who is brought on stage during “Mysterious Ways” and to Meerkat the show isn’t making her first appearance on stage. She was also on stage during the Vertigo tour at this same location. Ahead of “Stuck in A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” Bono spots a familiar face at the e-stage, and talks to the fan he pulled on stage in Montreal a few weeks earlier. Mark Baker is there with his band this evening, and they are all wearing matching shirts announcing their U2 tribute band “Acrobat”. Bono tells the rest of the band that the tribute band want to take over, and they invite the band on stage. Larry, Adam, and later Bono take up position at the side of the stage on the floor to watch the performance. Acrobat goes through a fun performance of “Desire” with Bono and The Edge on backing vocal. “Desire” had not been on the set list for the evening, and indeed “Stuck in a Moment” was planned to be the next song.

Another surprise happens at the end of the show. The set list calls for U2 to end with “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, but U2 end with a full band version of “Stand By Me” at the end of the night following that song. The band had long used Lennon’s version of the song in their pre-show mixes, and it is likely this is part of the previous mentioned Lennon celebration.

“Vertigo” gets little pieces of “Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio?” (The Ramones) and “God Save the Queen” (Sex Pistols). A line of U2’s own “Love and Peace or Else” appears in “Until the End of the World”. “Burning Down the House” makes an appearance in “Mysterious Ways” and “19” appears in “Bullet the Blue Sky”. “The Hands That Built America” takes its usual spot between “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. “Give Peace A Chance” appears at the end of “Pride”. “Beautiful Day” includes “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, And Understanding”, “Instant Karma” and another reference to “Give Peace A Chance”. “Moment of Surrender” is partially sung during “Bad” tonight. “Mother and Child Reunion” introduces “Where the Streets Have No Name” and that song includes a reference to “California (There is No End to Love)”.

Ahead of the show tonight, a sound check is heard, which includes U2 working on multiple versions of U2’s “The Fly”, but the song is not heard in the main set. This is potentially U2 testing out a new intermission video, instead of an actual sound check. In a few days in Boston, a new version of “The Fly” will replace the Johnny Cash video currently being used.

Both Toronto shows were announced on December 3, 2014, with a pre-sale for U2.com members taking place on December 4, 2014, and the general sale taking place on December 8, 2014.
