Show Details:

U2 do their biggest run of shows at one venue in North America with eight shows in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The shows start on July 18, and run until July 31, and finish off the first leg of the Innocence + Experience tour, before the band moves to Europe. This is the sixth of eight shows.

Tonight the band pulls out a surprise, even though it’s one that fans know they’ve been working on for a while. “Two Hearts Beat as One” has been heard in sound checks throughout this tour finally makes an appearance tonight. The last time it was played was in Dublin in 1989. Bono shared after the song, “This is not a Monday. It’s Saturday night. It’s a privilege to share the stage with these three brothers.” It’s the second song of the night and there’s definitely a bit of a party atmosphere in the house. The fans have been requesting the song for some time and Bono asks “are you happy?” at the end.

Two fans were up on stage, with Amp joining the band during “Mysterious Ways” and then Ignacio, a fan from Chile, who joined the band on guitar for “Angel of Harlem”, he is gifted with a guitar at the end of the performance. “The Troubles” reappears in the set list tonight, having not appeared since Montreal a few weeks earlier, it is only the fourth time the song has been played this tour. “October” was on the set list tonight, after “Angel of Harlem” but it isn’t played tonight.

Another change from the early set list happens at the end of the show. The last song is listed as “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” but the band instead chooses to play “One”. Like other nights, he wants to let the crowd sing, but the band and the crowd and Bono aren’t matching up and the song is stopped and restarted, and then later restarted again. Bono shares that he’s picky. He was finally successful at getting the crowd singing that he wants.

Tonight U2 use the Gavin Friday “Fly” video for the intermission. And during the intro to “Where the Streets Have No Name” where “Mother and Child Reunion” is performed there is a new video listing contributors to the fight against AIDS.

“When Johnny Comes Marching Home” appears during “Sunday Bloody Sunday” tonight, and a reference to “Love and Peace or Else” in “Until the End of the World” finishes off the first act. “Burning Down the House” and “Young Americans” are both included in “Mysterious Ways” tonight. “19” appears during Bono’s monologue in “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “The Hands that Built America” is in the usual spot between “Bullet” and “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. “I Remember You” by The Ramones is quoted by Bono during “Beautiful Day” and “In the Garden” by Van Morrison is quoted during “With or Without You”. “Mother and Child Reunion” by Paul Simon introduces “Where the Streets Have No Name”. “All You Need is Love” is referenced during “One”.

For each show at the Garden, a unique T-shirt and poster is sold, dated with the date of the performance. The back lists all eight dates, and has U2 over top of the symbol for protection used on the album. The front has the U2 over the symbol, surrounded with stars and listing “Madison Square Garden * NYC” in a design reminiscent of some older Ramones logos. Tonight the shirt is black.

Anton Corbijn, a photographer long associated with the band is at the show tonight. Julian Lennon is also at the show.

The fifth and sixth show for New York were announced on December 9, 2014. Pre-sales for U2.com members started on December 10, and the general sale for these started on December 10, 2014. Unlike the other shows in North America which used credit cards for entry, this show used hard tickets.
