Show Details:

After a break of five weeks, the Innocence + Experience tour resumed tonight in Europe with two shows in Turin. The band took residence in the arena a few days early to practice and get ready for the second leg of the tour. They also do an extensive rehearsal ahead of the show tonight as well. Early in the show Bono shared, “We’re so excited to be back here in the city of Turin, where we have had so many extraordinary nights. It’s been five years since we’ve been in this beautiful country. We missed you!”

The band have taken note of the refugee crisis starting in Europe, and the middle of the show is changed to reflect this. “October”, played twice on the tour so far, both times in New York, is added to the shows each night. Footage of bombed out Syrian buildings are shown on the screen as Bono and The Edge play the song. The band goes into a fiery version of “Bullet the Blue Sky” next. And the big surprise is “Zooropa” is next linking “Bullet the Blue Sky” and “Where the Streets Have No Name”. It is listed as a separate song in the set list, but the band play a shortened version of the song. Bono opens the song referring to the refugee crisis again, “I’m not dangerous, I’m in danger!” and at the end of the song answers “What do you want?” with “A Europe with its heart and borders closed to mercy? Or a Europe with its heart open?” The screen turns red as Bono speaks and “Where the Streets Have No Name” starts.

The Italian audience is loud tonight. They also have a flash mob planned, with the fan site U2Place organizing fans to turn the arena red in colour when the band started to play “Where the Streets Have No Name”, waving flags and other items in the colour red and holding up mobile phones displaying the (RED) logo.

During “Pride (In the Name of Love)” Bono references Alan Kurdi, a refugee from Syria, who was killed during his family’s attempt to find a better life. The boy, just two years old, drowned on September 2 in the Mediterranean Sea along with his mother and brother. Tonight in “Pride”, Bono sings “a boy washed up on an empty beach” in reference to the death, a line which will continue to be used in the years ahead. And during “One” Bono shares, “I don’t know the answer to the refugee crisis, but we must work together to find an answer.” During the Stephen Hawking video ahead of “City of Blinding Lights” the hashtag ‘refugeeswelcome’ is seen on the screen during the video.

Also continuing this leg, U2 continue to bring a fan onto the stage to film a song, and to stream it to the internet via Meerkat. Tonight’s fan is named Angela.

Snippets this evening include “Send in the Clowns”, “I Can See for Miles” and “Two Hearts Beat as One” during “The Electric Co.” During “Vertigo” we hear a bit of “God Save the Queen”. “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” pops up in “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Words” appears in “Until the end of the World”. U2’s own “California (There is No End to Love)” appears in “Where the Streets Have No Name”. “I Remember You” appears during “Beautiful Day” and “One” opens with “Mother and Child Reunion” and includes the “no them, only us” ending.

The intermission video continues to be the Gavin Friday sung “The Fly” introduced at the end of the 1st leg. The introduction song before U2 enter is Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power”, and the song after the show ends continues to be “Same Love” by Macklemore and Lewis with Mary Lambert.

Tonight during soundcheck the band practiced “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)”, “Bullet the Blue Sky”, “Zooropa”, “Where the Streets Have No Name”, as well as “Elevation”, “The Crystal Ballroom” and “One”. “The Crystal Ballroom” was not performed.

The Innocence + Experience tour was initially announced on December 3, 2014. This show was one of the initial shows announced. Tickets went on general sale on Monday, December 8. A presale for U2.com members started on December 4. (Subscribers who joined prior to September 9, 2014 were part of the Experience group and could go first, subscribers joining after that date were part of the Innocence group.) Both Turin shows were put on sale at the same time.
