Show Details:

U2 rehearse “I Will Follow” and “Desire” prior to tonight’s show at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, and “I Will Follow” is added as the second song of the night, fitting between “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s Day.”

Bono introduces “Bad” saying, “I am here to surrender to you, to music, to love, to my family. I’m here for surrender. Anything could happen.” As they did in Brisbane, the song is dedicated to the fire fighters, fighting wild fires in Australia. He calls for Willie Williams to give them a moment in the dark, and asks the audience to light up the stadium, before launching into an extended snippet of Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms.”

Bono makes references to the rain throughout the show. At the start of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” he mentions “Here comes the rain” and after the song he sings a lengthy bit of “Singing in the Rain” before starting “With or Without You.” The line in “Running to Stand Still” becomes “Step on a fast train, step out of the Irish rain, baby.” An umbrella comes up for Larry during “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” The stadium has a retractable roof which is closed during “Red Hill Mining Town”.

At the end of “In God’s Country” Bono thanks Australia on behalf of all of the Irish that have come there. He then spins a story about how The Edge and Larry had taken a second job during their teens with an Irish country act, The Drifting Cowboys. He asks them both what they learned. The Edge mentions at the time he was getting paid better with the Cowboys, 11 pounds and some free drink. When Larry is asked, Larry thanks Bono for asking, and plays a Foxtrot that he learned with the band.

Talking about Greg Carroll and his time with the band, Bono says “He came on board and he stayed on board, even if we lost him physically” ahead of an emotional performance of “One Tree Hill.”

Although they rehearsed “Desire” earlier in the day, the song that follows “The Joshua Tree” album segment is “Angel of Harlem.” Bono introduces it by saying this is what came next, and references playing those songs at the LoveTown tour 30 years ago in Australia.

The encore is typical of the tour so far. “Every Breaking Wave” is performed tonight instead of “You’re The Best Thing About Me.” During “Elevation” the camera is on Larry for his thumbs up, and we see that he is wearing a T-Shirt that is stenciled with “Melbourne” on the back.

A snippet of INXS’ “Devil Inside” is included in Vertigo. At the end of the night the outro song on the PA is “Never Tear Us Apart,” also by INXS. It replaces the song by Crowded House that has been played to date.

At 25 songs, this is the longest show of the tour to date, with “I Will Follow” being added to the show, and no songs being removed.
