Description:

Bono and The Edge perform at a tribute / memorial show for music producer Hal Willner who passed in 2020.

Show Details:

Bono and the Edge perform at a memorial service for music producer Hal Willner. Willner worked with U2 many times throughout his career on projects like the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack, the 2018 concert at the Apollo Theatre, the MusiCares award night for Adam Clayton, and the recent tribute to Marc Bolan and T.Rex, where U2 and Elton John contributed a cover of “Bang A Gong (Get it On)”. Willner died in 2020 from Covid-19, just one day after his birthday. Tonight’s memorial falls on what would have been Willner’s 66th birthday.

Bono and the Edge played three songs. They started with “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” and went immediately into “Walk On”. They later returned to do “Angel of Harlem” at the end of the show. (Thanks Xavi!)

The venue for the memorial is St. Ann’s Warehouse, a performance venue in Brooklyn with a capacity of 1500. The venue has long been associated with Willner. In 1989 he brought Marianne Faithfull to St. Ann’s to stage a pair of concerts. It is also where he staged Greetings from Tim Buckley, which inspired the late Jeff Buckley to pursue a career in music. Willner would use the venue to stage a number of performances. Rolling Stone once called St. Ann’s “The guiding light in New York’s avant-rock scene.” The space moved to its current location in Brooklyn Bridge Park, a historic tobacco warehouse, in 2014.

Although Laurie Anderson and Nick Cave are listed to perform, they do not appear during the performances.

The memorial is closed to the public and is by invitation only. The performances were filmed but at this point we are not aware of any plans to release these.
