Show Details:

The Apollo Theatre was first opened in 1938, and was built as a cinema and variety hall. In the 1970s is became a music hall only, presenting concerts from popular acts since that time. It is listed in the National Heritage List for England. U2 has performed at the venue in 1982, 1983, and returned for two nights in 1984.

At a capacity of 3500 people, the venue is the largest that is being played on the European leg of the shows. It is the second largest venue overall on the entire tour, being just behind The Chicago Theatre in size.

The show sees Bono performing songs, reading from his book, and acting out events from the book on stage, accompanied by three Irish musicians. Jacknife Lee, who has worked with U2 as a producer joins Bono on keyboards and drums. Kate Ellis accompanies him on cello, and Gemma Doherty is on harp, keyboards and keyboards.

Tonight Ali is once again in the audience. Bono also mentions that Mike Peters from the Alarm is present. Talking about the city Bono calls Manchester by a well known nickname, “Madchester”. He also talks about how it is almost 40 years to the day that he first played the Apollo, that time with U2 ahead of the release of the War album. Like other shows on the tour, “City of Blinding Lights” is only played once, and the version with the references to America is not added at the end of the show.

In the afternoon, ahead of the show, Bono visited the Chorlton Bookstore in Manchester. He signed books, and met with some fans already present at the store.

Many thanks to Nicole S. for her assistance with this report.
