Show Details:
The 29th annual Sarajevo Film Festival opened today with a showing of the film Kiss the Future by director Nenad Cicin-Sain. The film features a look at the role U2 played in the wartime and post-war Sarajevo during the 1990s. The film follows Bill Carter reaching out to U2, the live satellite interviews which were shown during the Zoo TV tour, and the promise U2 made to perform in the city, fulfilled in 1997 when they brought the PopMart tour to the city.
In attendance at the film were both Bono and The Edge, as well as their wives Ali and Morleigh, and longtime friend Christy Turlington. They walked the Sarajevo Film Festival red carpet in front of the National Theatre, on the way into the film, posing for cameras. At a showing of the film, Bono took the microphone after to sing a bit of “Redemption Song” unaccompanied by any music. And during the song, he managed to get The Edge to chime in. During the performance they were on a raised stage with others who had been involved in the film.
Some of the performance was shared on X via the journalist, Ika Ferrer Gotić.
U2 played a full show on the PopMart tour on September 23, 1997. It however, was not the only performance Bono has given in Sarajevo. In 1995 he spent New Year’s Eve in Sarajevo, and joined a local band for three songs during the celebrations. Tonight also marked the 30th anniversary of a Zoo TV performance at Wembley Stadium, one of the shows where footage from Sarajevo was shown, which is included in the film.
